California Speed – Nintendo 64 Game

California Speed is an arcade-style racing game for the Nintendo 64, adapted from a coin-op original. You pick a car and race across courses themed around Californian settings, from coastal roads and city streets to desert and countryside stretches, with checkpoints extending your time limit as you pass them. Handling is deliberately loose and exaggerated rather than simulation-focused, with jumps, shortcuts and scenery to bounce off. Races are run against a field of computer-controlled opponents, and finishing well opens up further content. The game supports split-screen play so a second person can join in. Presentation is straightforward: bright track visuals, an upbeat soundtrack and a simple front end that gets you into a race quickly. It suits short sessions where you retry a course to shave down your times.
