Calling is a first-person horror game for the Wii built around exploring dim, largely empty locations such as houses, corridors and school buildings. You move slowly from room to room, examine objects and read notes to piece together how the characters became connected to a haunted corner of the internet. A mobile phone is central to the design: calls come in, numbers can be dialled, and the Wii Remote is used for pointing, opening doors and reacting when something appears. There is little combat, so encounters are handled by avoidance and by responding quickly rather than fighting. The pacing is deliberate and the atmosphere leans on sound design, sudden appearances and Japanese ghost-story conventions rather than action. Progress moves between several playable characters.
