Castlevania

A Sega Genesis entry that moves the series out of Dracula’s castle and across Europe. You choose between two playable characters before starting: one fights with a whip, the other with a spear that offers different reach and a higher jump, and each handles stages and bosses somewhat differently. Play is linear and stage-based, with sub-weapons powered by hearts, breakable objects hiding items, and end-of-level boss encounters. Levels take place in varied locations rather than a single building, and several use scaling, rotation and other effects in their backgrounds and set pieces. Weapons can be powered up through pickups and lose strength when you take damage. Difficulty settings and a limited number of lives and continues govern how far a run can reach.
