Golvellius is an action-adventure game for the Sega Master System, played from an overhead perspective. You explore an outdoor world of fields, forests and valleys, fighting creatures with your sword and searching for the cave entrances scattered across the landscape. The caves lead to underground areas with their own enemies, items and bosses, and clearing them opens the way onward. Along the journey you gather money, upgrades and equipment that increase your strength and give you new options in combat, and villagers and characters you meet offer hints about where to go next. The goal is to work your way toward Golvellius himself. The structure encourages wandering, mapping the terrain and returning to earlier areas once you are better equipped.
