Hydro Thunder is an arcade powerboat racing game released for the Sega Dreamcast. You race boats across water courses set in varied environments, collecting boost pickups that fill a meter you can spend on speed bursts. Each track is packed with ramps, waterfalls, obstacles, and alternate routes, and many hide shortcuts that cut significant time off a lap once you learn where to look for them. The physics favor big air and hard landings over precise cornering, so timing your boost and lining up jumps are the main skills. Finishing near the front unlocks additional boats with different speed, acceleration, and handling characteristics. Racing is checkpoint-based against a field of rivals, with the clock extended each time you pass a marker.
