Lightening Force Quest for the Darkstar – Sega Genesis Game

Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar is a horizontally scrolling shoot-’em-up for the Sega Genesis, released outside Japan as part of the Thunder Force series. You pilot a heavily armed starfighter through stages set over oceans, deserts, caverns and mechanical fortresses, cycling between several distinct weapons on the fly to deal with enemies above, below and behind you. Levels scroll vertically as well as horizontally, giving the playfield more room than a typical shooter of the era, and stages can be tackled in a chosen order early on. Enemy formations, mid-stage gun emplacements and large multi-part bosses fill the screen, and power-ups add trailing support units that fire alongside your ship. Presentation leans on layered parallax backgrounds and a driving synth-rock soundtrack.
