Mario Party 9 changes the series structure by moving all players together in a shared vehicle rather than having each character travel the board independently. Players take turns as the driver, rolling dice to advance the group along a linear route, and the spaces landed on affect everyone aboard. Instead of stars bought with coins, players gather Mini Stars along the way and can lose them to hazards and rival events. Boards end with a boss encounter, and smaller mid-stage battles appear as well, with rewards based on damage dealt. Minigames use the Wii Remote for motion and button play and include free-for-all, team and one-against-three formats. Up to four players can take part, with computer opponents filling remaining slots, and separate modes let you play minigames outside the board games.
