Mega Turrican is a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter for the Sega Genesis. You control an armoured soldier moving through large, multi-tiered stages filled with enemies, turrets and mechanical bosses. Alongside a standard forward-firing weapon that can be swapped and powered up with pickups, you have a grappling beam that latches onto ceilings and ledges so you can swing across gaps and reach higher ground. A defensive lightning attack sweeps enemies from around you, and a limited-use screen-clearing bomb is available for tight spots. Levels vary between tight interiors and open outdoor areas, with hidden pickups tucked into destructible scenery. The presentation leans on detailed backgrounds and a synth-heavy soundtrack, and the emphasis throughout is on sustained shooting and mobility rather than puzzle solving.
