Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero steps away from the series’ fighting format and instead casts you as Sub-Zero in a side-scrolling action game. You move along a 2D plane through stages built from platforms, traps and enemy encounters, fighting with punches, kicks and the character’s ice-based special moves. Combat uses a dedicated turn button so you can switch which direction you face while attacking. Defeated enemies and hidden areas yield experience and items, and new abilities are learned as you progress. The story is presented as a prequel to the fighting games, told through live-action full-motion video cutscenes between stages, and it follows Sub-Zero on a mission that ties into the series’ mythology. Boss fights against larger opponents punctuate the levels, and passwords or saves let you continue a run on Nintendo 64.
