The Saturn version of NHL 98 is part of EA Sports’ annual hockey series, licensed by the NHL and NHLPA so you play with real clubs and named players. Games are standard five-on-five hockey with rule toggles for penalties, offsides and icing, plus adjustable period lengths and difficulty. Exhibition, season and playoff modes are available, and two players can compete head-to-head. Checking, fighting and power plays factor into how a period unfolds, and behind the scenes you can set lines, make trades, and follow player and team statistics. The rink is rendered in 3D with selectable camera angles, and commentary and arena audio run over the action. Controls cover passing, shooting, dekes and one-timers for players who want to work the puck around.
