Nightmare Creatures II is a third-person action game with a gothic horror setting. You control Herbert Wallace, a man held and experimented on in an asylum, who escapes and sets out after the occultist Adam Crowley. Combat is melee-focused, built around heavy weapon swings, blocks and finishing blows against mutated creatures that stalk the game’s dark streets, laboratories and industrial interiors. Levels are linear stages punctuated by locked doors, switches and simple environmental puzzles, with bosses closing out sections. Wallace can take a limited amount of punishment, so managing health pickups and keeping enemies in front of you matters. The presentation leans on murky lighting, fog and gore, with a heavy soundtrack backing the action.
