Prize Fighter – Sega CD Game

Prize Fighter is a full-motion-video boxing game for the Sega CD, presented almost entirely through live-action footage shot in black and white. You see the fight from your boxer’s point of view, facing filmed opponents who telegraph their punches, while a trainer shouts advice from the corner between rounds. Controls are simple: you throw left and right punches at high or low targets and block or duck incoming shots, with success depending on reading the video and reacting at the right moment. Wins advance you through a series of increasingly capable opponents on the road to a title bout, and story scenes between fights involve managers and outside pressure on your career. The game is a showcase of the Sega CD’s video playback rather than a simulation-style boxing title.
