Saiyuki Journey West – PS1 Game

Saiyuki: Journey West is a PlayStation strategy role-playing game based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. You lead a party on a pilgrimage westward, with the monk at its centre joined by companions drawn from the story, including the monkey figure familiar from many adaptations. Battles play out on isometric grids where you move each character in turn, position them for attacks and use special abilities and magic against demons and bandits. Beyond straightforward fighting, you can win over some enemies rather than destroying them, adding them to your side and expanding the range of units you can field. Between fights the story advances through dialogue scenes as the group travels from region to region. Character growth, equipment and unit variety give the combat a tactical focus throughout.
