Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a side-scrolling platformer for the Sega Genesis. You play as Sonic or Tails across multi-act zones, running through loops and slopes, collecting rings and defeating Dr. Robotnik’s machines. Tails can fly and carry Sonic, and a second player can take control of him while Sonic is played in single player. New shield items give elemental abilities: fire, lightning and water shields each provide a distinct move alongside protection from damage. Special stages are reached through hidden giant rings and take place on a rotating spherical grid where you collect blue spheres to earn Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles the Echidna appears as an antagonist who sets traps and shortcuts through levels. The game includes a save feature for tracking progress and a competitive two-player race mode.
