Steel Empire is a horizontally scrolling shooter for the Sega Genesis set in a steam-powered, dieselpunk world of armored zeppelins, locomotives and propeller aircraft. Before starting, you choose between two craft: a nimble fighter plane and a slower, sturdier airship that can absorb more punishment. Your ship fires forward and backward, so enemies approaching from behind can be answered without turning around. Shooting enemies builds experience that upgrades your main weapon’s power over the course of a run, and bombs are held in reserve for crowded moments. Stages move through skies, fortresses and industrial landscapes, each ending in a large multi-part boss machine. The art style leans on riveted metal and smokestacks rather than conventional science fiction, and difficulty settings let you adjust how much pressure the enemy formations apply.
