Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is an action game for the original Xbox that flips the usual survival horror setup: you play as the zombie. As Stubbs, you shamble through a retro-futuristic 1950s city, attacking citizens, eating brains and turning your victims into a growing horde that fights alongside you. Your abilities are built from your own body parts, including a detachable hand that can possess humans, a head that can be bowled into crowds, gas attacks and explosive organs. Police and military forces push back as you advance through the city’s neighbourhoods and facilities. The tone is comedic throughout, with period-styled architecture, satire of mid-century optimism and a soundtrack of 1950s pop songs performed as covers by later artists. A co-operative mode allows a second player to join in.
