Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare on Game Boy Color is a handheld adaptation of the horror adventure, rebuilt for the system’s limited hardware. The setting remains Shadow Island, where investigator Edward Carnby and academic Aline Cedrac arrive to look into a death and a set of missing artefacts, and find the place overrun by creatures. Play is presented from an overhead perspective, mixing exploration of the mansion and island locations with item collection, puzzle solving and combat against the creatures that block your path. Light is a recurring element of the fiction, with the darkness itself sheltering the things hunting you. Presentation uses small sprites and colour backgrounds, and progress is saved on the cartridge. It is a single-player game focused on working out where to go and what to use.
