Defender of the Crown places you in medieval England as a Saxon noble competing for control of the country after the king’s death. Play unfolds on a map divided into territories, where you manage income, buy soldiers and catapults, and send armies against rival lords. Turns alternate between strategic decisions and short action sequences, including jousting and swordfighting, that break up the map play. Sieges pit your troops and siege equipment against defended castles. You can also form alliances and pursue other nobles’ holdings as the balance of power shifts. Victory comes from claiming enough territory to be recognised as ruler. The NES version combines the turn-based territory campaign with these simple arcade-style interludes, and the mix of strategy and light action defines how a run plays out.
