Mortal Kombat 3 on the Game Boy is a handheld conversion of the third arcade entry, running in monochrome with small digitized-style sprites. The roster is reduced from the arcade version, and matches play out as best-of-three rounds against a ladder of computer opponents, with two-player fights available over a Link Cable. The two-button layout handles punches and kicks with combinations for blocking and special moves, which are performed using directional inputs. Features carried over from MK3 include the run function and finishing moves, presented in simplified form to suit the hardware. Backgrounds are pared down, and animation is limited compared with the console versions, making this a compact take on the game for play on the go.
