A side-scrolling action RPG in which you play as Soma Cruz, drawn into a castle where he discovers he can absorb the powers of the creatures he defeats. This Tactical Soul system means enemies can drop souls that grant new attacks, familiars, passive bonuses or abilities needed to reach previously blocked areas. You explore a single interconnected castle map, gaining traversal skills that gradually open new routes, while equipping weapons and armour that change your reach and attack speed. Enemies and bosses drop equipment as well as souls, encouraging repeat encounters to build a preferred loadout. Progress is tracked on a map screen that fills in as you explore, and save rooms and warp points are spread through the castle to shorten backtracking.
