Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back is a 3D platformer for the PlayStation. Crash is recruited by Doctor Neo Cortex to gather Crystals, which sends you through jungle, sewer, ice, ruin and space-themed stages. Levels are structured around a hub of warp rooms: you enter a stage, reach the end, and return with the Crystal, with hidden Gems awarded for smashing every box or finding secret routes. Movement builds on spinning, jumping and a new slide and body slam, and stages mix behind-the-back running sections with side-scrolling and chase segments where you run toward the camera. Vehicle and animal-riding levels break up the platforming, and boss fights close out each group of stages. Aku Aku masks provide temporary protection and, when stacked, brief invincibility.
