Criticom is a one-on-one fighting game for the Sega Saturn with a science-fiction premise, pitting a cast of alien warriors, cyborgs and armoured combatants against one another. Fighters are rendered as 3D polygonal models and battles take place in enclosed arenas, with rounds decided by depleting the opponent’s health bar. Each character has their own set of punches, kicks, throws and special moves performed through directional and button combinations, and the roster is built around varied silhouettes and gimmicks rather than realistic martial arts. Modes cover single-player play against the computer and head-to-head matches against a second player. Presentation is dark and metallic, with pre-fight text framing each character’s reason for entering the tournament. It is a straightforward round-based fighter rather than a weapon-based or arena-movement one.
