A maze-based spin-off from Sega’s Fantasy Zone series for the Master System. Instead of the free-flying shooting of the earlier games, Opa-Opa is confined to enclosed single-screen mazes viewed from above, moving along corridors while shooting enemies that patrol them. Clearing a stage involves dealing with the hazards and creatures in the maze and reaching the exit, with the series’ bright pastel look and cartoon character designs carried over intact. Money collected from enemies can be spent on items and upgrades, keeping a link to the shop mechanic Fantasy Zone is known for. The result plays much more like a classic arcade maze game than a shoot-’em-up, while keeping the cheerful presentation and Opa-Opa as the star.
