Formula One: Built to Win is a racing game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that mixes competition with car building and progression. You start out in lower-level events and earn money from finishing well, then spend it on parts such as engines, tyres, suspension and bodywork to improve your vehicle and qualify for faster classes of racing. Races are viewed from behind the car as it scrolls into the screen, with traffic to pass and corners that punish poor braking. Between events you visit shops and menus to fit upgrades and manage your finances, so choosing which components to buy is as much a part of the game as driving. Different event types appear as you climb the ranks, working toward the top level of single-seater competition suggested by the title.
