Gauntlet Legends moves the series into 3D while keeping the overhead viewpoint and monster-swarm combat. You choose from fantasy character classes, each with different melee, ranged and magic capabilities, and travel through themed worlds full of generators, traps and locked doors, finishing with boss encounters. Health drains as you play, so food remains a key pickup alongside keys, potions and gold. Characters gain levels and can spend gold between stages to raise stats such as strength, armour and speed, and progress can be saved so a hero carries over between sessions. Elemental weapon pickups, turbo attacks and special items temporarily change your fighting style. Up to four players can play together on one screen, sharing every item that drops, which makes cooperation and quick grabbing part of the experience. Play is centred on crowd control and steady character growth.
