Golden Axe is a side-scrolling fantasy beat ’em up. You pick one of three warriors, each with different reach, speed and magic strength, and fight through forests, villages, mountain paths and castle interiors toward the tyrant Death Adder. Combat covers basic sword and axe strikes, jumping attacks, throws and a shoulder charge, and you can mount rideable beasts that add tail swipes or fire breath until they are knocked out from under you. Small thieves scurry through the stages carrying sacks of magic potions and food; kicking them loose builds your magic reserve, and spending it triggers a screen-filling elemental spell that scales with how much you have stored. Two players can fight side by side, and the Genesis version also includes a separate mode of successive one-on-one duels.
