Metroid Prime moves the series into 3D and a first-person viewpoint. As Samus Aran you explore the planet Tallon IV, moving between regions such as overgrown ruins, a lava-filled cavern system and a frozen complex, unlocking new areas as you recover suit upgrades, beams and missile expansions. Combat uses a lock-on system, letting you circle-strafe enemies while switching beams to match their weaknesses. Visors are central to play: the scan visor logs creatures, machinery and lore entries that fill in the backstory of the Chozo and the Space Pirates, while thermal and X-ray visors reveal things ordinary sight cannot. The Morph Ball becomes a third-person mode used for tunnels, bomb jumps and half-pipes. Progress is largely non-linear within the limits of your current equipment.
