NHL 96 is a licensed hockey game for the Sega Genesis with NHL teams and players. Games are played five-on-five from an angled overhead camera, using controls for passing, shooting, dekes, checking and goalie play, with faceoffs, penalties and power plays included. Along with exhibition matches and playoff play, the game offers season play with standings, statistics and roster management. Rule settings let you adjust period length, penalties, offside and difficulty to shift the balance between arcade pace and simulation detail. Two players can compete head-to-head using a second controller. Presentation includes crowd and arena audio, goal celebrations and statistics screens between periods, and the game keeps the series’ emphasis on quick transitions and shooting off passes rather than slow positional play.
