NHL 99 brings EA Sports’ hockey series to the Nintendo 64 with NHL and NHLPA licensing, meaning real teams and player names on the ice. Play is five-on-five with rule settings for penalties, offsides and icing, adjustable period lengths and multiple difficulty levels. You can drop into an exhibition game, play through a season, or go directly to the playoffs, and the N64’s four controller ports allow several players to take part in the same match. Checking, fighting and power plays shape the pace of a period, and the menus cover line changes, trades, player ratings and statistics. The rink is presented in 3D with selectable camera views, and commentary and crowd audio accompany the action. Passing, dekes and one-timers are all in the control scheme.
