NHLPA Hockey ’93 is a Sega Genesis hockey game and part of EA’s early hockey series. It uses the series’ angled overhead view of the rink, with one-button passing and shooting, digitized crowd noise and organ music between whistles. The NHLPA license means real player names appear on the rosters. Play covers exhibition matches, season play and playoff series, with statistics tracked as you go, plus adjustable period lengths and rule settings such as penalties and offsides. Fights break out after heavy collisions and are settled in a short button-mashing exchange, one of the details most associated with this entry. Skating feels quick, and scoring rewards learning where the goalie leaves openings. Two-player games on the same console are a large part of its appeal.
