The original Xbox is Microsoft’s first home console, built around a DVD-ROM drive and an internal hard drive. The hard drive stores game saves without a separate memory card and allows some titles to cache data or use ripped music CDs as custom soundtracks. The console has four controller ports on the front, and its controllers use analog sticks, a D-pad, analog triggers, and pressure-sensitive face buttons. Two memory card slots are built into each controller. The system supports online play through Xbox Live, which required a broadband connection via the rear Ethernet port. Video output is handled through a proprietary AV connector, with support for higher-definition modes in compatible games. The library spans first-person shooters, racing, sports, and action titles, and later Xbox 360 models offered partial backward compatibility.
