Phantasy Star Universe on PlayStation 2 combines a story-driven single-player campaign with a separate online mode. The offline story follows Ethan Waber through a plot involving an alien threat to the Gurhal system, moving between cutscenes, towns and mission areas where combat is handled in real time with melee weapons, ranged arms and technique casting. Party members join Ethan over the course of the story and can be given basic orders. The Network Mode uses a character you create yourself, choosing race and class, and centres on accepting missions, gathering loot, synthesising equipment and levelling up. Weapon types each have their own photon arts, and swapping between weapons mid-fight is part of normal play. Hub cities provide shops, storage and mission counters.
