Space Channel 5 is a rhythm game for the Dreamcast in which you play as Ulala, a reporter for a television news station covering an alien invasion. The Morolians are abducting people and forcing them to dance, and your job is to report the story by out-dancing them. Play follows a call-and-response structure: enemies issue a sequence of directional and shooting commands in time with the music, and you repeat the pattern back on the beat. Successful sequences rescue hostages and build your viewer ratings, while mistakes cost you. The presentation uses fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backdrops with a bright retro-futuristic look, and the soundtrack drives every encounter. Stages progress through the space station and beyond as the broadcast continues.
