Star Ocean

Star Ocean: The Second Story is a science-fantasy role-playing game for the PlayStation. You begin by choosing between two protagonists, Claude and Rena, whose perspectives change which scenes and companions you encounter, and the story ends differently depending on the relationships you build. Combat plays out in real time on a 3D-rendered battlefield: you directly control one party member while the rest fight under AI settings, using special arts and spells drawn from a shared gauge. Between chapters you can enter Private Actions in towns, splitting the party for optional character conversations that shift affection values. A deep skill and specialty system supports item creation, letting you cook, smith, write books and craft accessories. Hand-drawn character art and prerendered backgrounds carry the presentation.
