The King of Fighters ’96 is an entry in SNK’s 2D fighting series, released for the Sega Saturn. You pick a team of three characters and face opposing teams in consecutive one-on-one rounds, with each defeated fighter replaced by the next member until one side’s team is eliminated. The roster is organised into themed teams drawn from across SNK’s fighting games, and you can also assemble custom lineups. This installment revises the control scheme from earlier entries, changing how dodging, rolling and short hops work, and adjusting the power gauge system used to trigger enhanced special attacks. Fights use four attack buttons plus directional motions for specials. Backgrounds and sprites are hand-drawn 2D, and the presentation includes the series’ character intros and team-based story framing.
