R-Type – Sega Master System Game

R-Type on the Master System is a conversion of Irem’s horizontal scrolling shooter. You pilot the R-9 fighter through stages of biomechanical corridors and organic enemy structures, facing wave-based attack patterns and large bosses that must be hit at specific weak points. The signature mechanic is the Force, a detachable orb that absorbs enemy fire and can be docked to the front or rear of your ship or sent out ahead of you to clear a path. Holding the fire button charges a wave cannon shot that punches through tougher targets, and power-ups swap your Force’s attack between spreading, reflecting and piercing beam types. Level layouts demand memorisation, since tight passages and enemy placement leave little room for improvisation. The eight-bit version reworks the arcade stages for the Sega hardware.
