The Karate Kid on the NES adapts the film series into a side-scrolling action game. You play as Daniel LaRusso, beginning with the All Valley karate tournament, where you face opponents in one-on-one matches. After the tournament the game shifts into side-scrolling stages where you move right through waves of enemies and hazards, punching and kicking your way to the end of each area. Along the way you can earn special moves, including the crane kick and the drum punch, which use up a limited meter when performed. Bonus rounds break up the action between stages. Controls are simple, with a single attack button and directional inputs for jumps and crouching attacks, and the difficulty comes largely from crowded enemy placement and precise platforming.
