Dark Duel Stories is a card battler for Game Boy Color built on a simplified version of the Yu-Gi-Oh dueling rules rather than the full trading card game. You assemble a deck of monster, spell and trap cards, then face a series of opponents drawn from the series in one-on-one matches. Monsters have elemental and type attributes that create advantages and disadvantages against one another, and fusing cards together to form stronger monsters is a central tactic. Winning duels earns you new cards to build out your collection and refine your deck. The presentation uses static card art and simple menus, with duels resolved through attribute matchups and card combinations. Link cable support allows duels and card trading with another player who has a copy of the game.
