Destiny of an Emperor is a turn-based role-playing game for the NES set during China’s Three Kingdoms period, drawing on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story. You lead Liu Bei and his officers across a map of ancient China, recruiting generals, capturing cities and pushing toward unification. Combat is unusual for the era: instead of individual fighters, each party member commands a unit of soldiers, and troop strength serves as both hit points and attack power, so wearing down an enemy general’s forces reduces their effectiveness. Defeated enemy officers can sometimes be persuaded to join your ranks, and you manage a roster far larger than the party you take into battle. Tactics, spells and items round out the encounters between story scenes and overworld travel.
