Out of This World – SNES Game

Out of This World is a cinematic platformer in which you play Lester, a young scientist thrown onto a hostile alien planet after an experiment goes wrong. You run, jump, swim and climb through side-scrolling environments, and early on acquire a weapon that can fire a shot, project a shield or charge up to blast through barriers. Progress depends heavily on observation and trial and error: hazards and enemies kill in a single hit, and you learn each screen’s solution by dying and retrying from checkpoints. The game uses rotoscoped, fluid character animation and stark polygonal backgrounds, and tells its story without dialogue or on-screen text, relying on cutscenes woven directly into the action. An alien companion accompanies you for stretches of the journey.
