Populous – SNES Game

Populous for the Super Nintendo casts you as a god watching over a small population of followers from above. Your people need flat land to build on, so you spend much of your time raising and lowering terrain square by square, smoothing out the world so settlements can grow into larger dwellings. A bigger, wealthier population feeds your divine power, which you spend on effects aimed at the opposing deity’s followers, including swamps, earthquakes and other disasters. You can also direct your people to gather and march on enemy territory. Each map is a self-contained world with its own terrain to reshape, and progress means clearing them one after another. The result is a slower, top-down strategy game about landscaping and population growth rather than direct control of individual units.
