Blackthornes – SNES Game

Listed here as “Blackthornes,” this is the Super Nintendo action-platformer Blackthorne. You control Kyle Blackthorne, a fighter armed with a pump-action shotgun, as he works through underground mine and fortress environments held by an enemy army. Movement is deliberate rather than acrobatic: you walk, climb, drop down ledges and press back against walls to take cover, popping out to fire and then hiding again while enemies shoot at you. Levels are laid out as interconnected maps with lifts, switches and locked routes, so progress involves learning the layout and backtracking as well as combat. You can pick up and use items such as bombs and keys, and freeing captured prisoners can yield help. The presentation uses digitized-looking sprite animation and dark, industrial backdrops.
