Shadowgate – NES Game

Shadowgate is a first-person adventure game for the NES, adapted from the home computer original. You explore the castle of Shadowgate room by room, viewed through a still illustration of each location, and interact using a set of on-screen commands to look at, take, open and use the objects you find. Progress comes from solving item and environment puzzles: reading inscriptions, finding keys and tools, and working out how to get past magical obstacles. Torches burn down as you play and must be replaced, adding pressure to your exploration. The game is generous with sudden deaths, and a wrong move can end the run outright, so trial and error and careful note-taking are part of playing. The presentation combines detailed painted rooms with a moody soundtrack, and text describes the results of your actions.
