Mario Tennis on Game Boy Color is a handheld tennis game featuring Mario series characters, each with different speed, power and reach. Matches use standard tennis scoring in singles and doubles, and you build rallies with topspin, slice, lob and drop shots timed against your opponent’s returns. The presentation uses sprite art with a perspective view of the court, and courts vary in surface and behaviour. Alongside exhibition matches and tournaments against computer opponents, the game includes a story-driven mode in which you play as an original character, progressing through junior-level competition and improving your abilities as you win matches. Link cable support allows head-to-head play with another Game Boy Color owner. The pick-up-and-play match length suits handheld sessions while the tournament ladder provides longer single-player structure.
