Mendel Palace is a single-screen action puzzle game developed by Game Freak for the NES. Each stage is a floor made up of tiles, and your character can flip any tile they step onto. Flipping a tile out from under an approaching enemy sends it sliding away and off the board, and clearing every enemy completes the stage. Different tile types add effects such as pushing, spinning or damaging, so learning what each floor pattern does is central to play. Enemies behave differently from one another, some chasing you directly and others moving in set patterns, and stages are grouped into themed sets ending in a boss encounter. A two-player mode lets a second person join in. The pace is fast and the rules are simple, with difficulty coming from crowded rooms and awkward tile layouts.
