Pokemon Red – Gameboy Game

Pokemon Red is a role-playing game for the Game Boy in which you leave home as a new trainer and travel the region of Kanto, catching and raising Pokemon. Battles are turn-based and built around type matchups, with each Pokemon knowing up to four moves and gaining levels, evolving, and learning new attacks over time. You work through a series of Gym Leaders to earn badges, contend with the criminal Team Rocket, and eventually challenge the Elite Four. Filling out the Pokedex is a parallel goal, and some species appear only in this version, so trading with another cartridge via Link Cable is required to complete the list. The Link Cable also supports battles between two players. Progress is saved directly to the cartridge.

What does Pokemon Red play on?

It plays on the Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and GBA SP. It does not fit the Game Boy Micro or any DS.

What’s included?

How does it save?

It saves to memory inside the cartridge, kept alive by a small battery. These batteries last for decades but are now old; when one runs out the game still plays but cannot keep a save until the battery is replaced (more on save batteries).
