Tombs and Treasure – NES Game

Tombs and Treasure is an adventure game for the NES set among the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. You lead a small party exploring temples, pyramids and courtyards in search of a missing professor and the secrets buried in the site. Play alternates between an overhead view for moving around the grounds and closer views for examining rooms, where a command menu lets you look at objects, take items, talk to companions and use what you are carrying. Much of the game is puzzle work built on Mayan architecture, inscriptions and astronomy, with clues gathered in one location often needed somewhere else. Random encounters with enemies bring simple turn-based battles that use the party’s stats and items, adding a light role-playing layer to the exploration.
