River City Ransom – NES Game

River City Ransom is a side-scrolling beat ’em up with role-playing elements. You play as Alex, joined by Ryan in two-player cooperative play, fighting through city streets, malls and schoolyards against gangs of students to rescue Cyndi. Enemies drop money when defeated, and you spend it in shops on food, books and items that permanently raise stats such as strength, defence and stamina, or teach new techniques like the Stone Hands and Dragon Feet attacks. Weapons including pipes, chains and trash cans can be picked up and thrown. The city is open enough to wander between areas, with boss gang leaders guarding the way forward, and the cartoon-styled sprites and short lines of enemy dialogue give the fights a light tone. Both players can also hit each other.
