Silent Service – NES Game

Silent Service is a submarine simulation for the Nintendo Entertainment System set during World War II in the Pacific. You command an American submarine, patrolling shipping lanes and attacking enemy convoys and warships. Play moves between a map view for navigation and intercept planning, a periscope view for identifying targets and estimating range and bearing, and status screens covering torpedoes, fuel, damage and crew. Firing solutions require attention to your target’s speed and heading, and once you attack, destroyers may close in and depth-charge you, forcing you to dive, run quiet and wait out the search. The game offers individual missions and longer war patrols, with different starting conditions and difficulty settings. It is a slower, more methodical game than most NES action titles.
